Adenoma Hepatitis Cured After Resection

Abstract

The authors discuss a case of Adenoma of the liver in which surgical treatment has proved effective.

Adenoma of the liver is a benign tumour of rare occurrence — only a few tens of cases have been recorded in the literature. It occurs in all age-group, in suckling’s and old people alike, - its weight varying within wide limits, from 100 grams to as much as 10 kilograms.

Patho-anatomically, hepatic adenomas — hepatomas and cholangiomas — may be trabecular or alveolate in shape (trabecular and acinose-vesicular types).

The most frequent clinical manifestation of disease is a tumour, in some parts of the upper floor of the abdomen, though its presence is not always characteristic of the adenoma, occurring as it does in a series of other diseases as well.

A reliable clinical diagnosis appears to be impossible.

In the opinion of the authors, the only successful method of treatment of the disease is a surgical removal of the affected tissue.

Among the successful resections of the 'liver — performed because of the presence of benign tumours — recorded in the literature, no references are to be found' to hepatic adenomas.

The authors present the case of hepatic adenoma in a girl, 14, who had a tumour the size of a child’s head weighing 500 grams, in the upper part of the left lobe, tin front. She had temperature and pain while at the clinic. Laboratory and patho-histologic tests revealed hyperacidity and large hepatocytes.

The removal was affected by resection of the left lobe of the liver. Post-operative follow-up period of five months showed no pathologic changes. The general condition of the patient continued to be satisfactory throughout the period; she was discharged in perfect health fit to attend school.
