Application of Fluorescent Antibody-Test (FTA) in Syphilis

The FTA at 1 : 200 dilution was tested and compared with complement fixation test, the VDRL and MKR on 244 patients in different stages of the syphilitic infection (not yet treated, in treatment, after treatment) on 17 problem, sera, 7 different skin disorders and 27 healthy children.
FTA test has proved to be highly sensitive, easily reproducible and specific.
In the ’untreated primary syphilis FTA was highly specific and slightly more sensible than standard serological tests.
In the treated patients the FTA persisted reactive for a longer time than any other classical serological test.
High specificity of the FTA test could be demonstrated especially in the group of latent syphilis and problem sera with biological false positive results.
