Abstract

Electroencephalographic examinations were carried out in 129 patients with paroxysmal hemicrania where investigation showed no underlying structural pathology. In 58 patients (45°/o) the EEG was abnormal. The incidence of abnormal EEG-s in the group of male patients was almost as high as in the group of female patients.

In 48 cases (37°/o) electroencephalographic changes were non-specific, consisting of occurrence of theta and delta waves, and in 9 patients also of the occurrence of beta activity. 33 patients (25%) manifested an intensified reaction to electroencephalographic hyperventilation, whereby the intensification did not depend on the patient’s age.

Paroxysmal activity significant for epilepsy was found in 10 patients (8°/o). The authors believe that in such cases it is rather reasonable to suppose epilepsy as the basis of paroxysmal headaches and, accordingly, to attempt adequate treatment.
