Abstract

The fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test (FTA-ABS) was studied in 56 patients and was found to be highly sensitive and specific.

In patient with early syphilis the FTA-ABS test was reactive as often as the VDRL.

In treated patients in latent stage of the disease the TPI test was reactive more often than the FTA-ABS test. TPI results agreed with those of FTA-ABS test in 87,5%. The congruence of other performed serological tests for diagnosis of syphilis was weaker in MKR and VDRL and somewhat higher in Kolmer complement fixation test.

It is supposed that the fluorescent treponemal antibodies produced at the beginning of the syphilitic infection are rather group specific than type specific to the T. pallidum antigen.
