Abstract

Dermatophytes of some parts of the People’s Republic of Macedonia are herein described. It differs essentially in its composition from flora of other neighbouring Republics by endemic foci of T. ferrugineum. Out of 401 positively isolated cases it was found that T. ferrugineum was represented by 30,2%, T. violaceum was isolated in 59,4%, T. schoenleini in 8,5% cases, T. tonsurans 1,3%, M. audouini 0,4% and T. verrucosum 0,2% of all isolated cases.

There are two regions on Yugoslav territory in which microsporia appears in endemic forms, in North in Serbia and Vojvodina (M. audouini) and in the South in Macedonia (T. ferrugineum). Both agents remain generally limited to their endemic foci as regionary characteristics of the spectrum of dermatophytes. Even if sporadic cases of microporia with T. ferrugineum or M. audouini appear outside their endemic regions, they remain as a rule isolated and Without tendency of infection being expanded.

It appears that the focus of T. ferrugineum is autochthonous in Macedonia. It is not likely that the infection was brought from the Far East (Corea) or else from Africa. It is possible however that T. ferrugineum was brought into Macedonia simultaneously with the other countries of the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Albania) during the same historical epoch which is difficult to determine now.
