Pođimo korak dalje u pravcu prirodnije sistematizacije mikroba

Mikrobiologija je izrazito empiriska i eksperimentalna nauka koja za sve svoje zasade, rezultate i dostignuća ima zahvaliti zapažanjima na zbivanjima u prirodi ili u eksperimentu. Nikakvo čudo da se ta nauka već od svoga početka do danas više ili manje poistovjetila sa njenim primjenama u medicini, veterini, poljoprivredi i industriji. Poslije prvih triumfa u humanoj i veterinarskoj medicini u Pasteurovoj eri i kratko poslije toga došla je neke vrste „mrtva sezona“ koja je ponovo naglo oživjela u eri antibiotika. Industriska proizvodnja antibiotika skrenula nam je pažnju na ostale oblasti i korišćenje mikroba u industriji gdje se mikrobiologiji otvaraju sve veće perspektive. Čitav niz fabričkih postrojenja radi danas sa biološkim postupcima, od proizvodnje alkohola i alkoholnih pica, sirćeta i antibiotika do proizvodnje mliječne kiseline i šećera, raznih vitamina itd. I u poljoprivredi se mikrobiologija sve više uvažava.
