Abstract

The author presents the results of field and laboratory study of testing various hypothesis about the reservoir of typhus fever in SR Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During ten years 352 human sera from patients in Bosnia and Herzegovina suspect to suffer from murine typhus fever have been examined. This disease could be proved neither by isolation of r. provazeki nor by C. F. test, when used suspension of washed r. prowazeki and r. mooseri.

However, sera from 4 patients living in Dalmatia (Adriatic coast) gave positive rising titters for murine typhus fever in agglutination test as well in C. F. test.

In 4 epidemics of typhus fever 6 subclinical and 4 inapparent cases of epidemic typhus fever among small children have been detected. Although in a very lousy environment those cases didn’t cause any new infections of typhus fever among susceptible persons.

Using a detailed epidemiologic inquiry form for every of above 500 serologically proved cases of epidemic typhus fever, infected louse foeces couldn’t be considered as reservoir in which rickettsiae persisted in time period between two cases of this disease.

The positive typhus fever reactors were not found among sheep and cattle in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This study has been performed in endemic focci of epidemic typhus fever as well in typhus-free areas.

The author concludes that in Bosnia and Herzegovina as the reservoir of epidemic typhus fever can be considered only the primary cases of still existing typhus fever as well its recrudescent (Brill-Zinsser disease).
